Let the games begin
Follow us and Sweden’s best knights to the most energetic show of the Middle Age.
The year is 1288 and the civil war on Gotland has ended. King Magnus has fined the citizens of Visby for building a city wall without his permission. The King has ordered a tournament in order to bring the two sides of the civil war, the city and the countryside, closer together. The Mayor and the Country Judge with their entourages, each representing one side, are present at the games cheering on their fighters. Whose side are you on? Wave your pennant and cheer on your favourite team to an honourable victory!
Below is a presentation of the eminent participants of this competition:
The Knights - Torneamentum Jousting Society
With massive lances, their faces hidden behind a helmet, on a proud horse they enter the arena in order to challenge each other. A good hit in man-to-man combat can knock the opponent out of his saddle.
Torneamentum is now Swedens oldest and best known jousting society. All the armour and weapons used are based on historical models from the 13th and 14th century.
The Knights’ Attendants
Each knight has his own attendant. The attendant’s task is to
always support his knight and master, to make sure weapons
and armor are in the best condition and to help on the court
during the tournament.
Styringheim's brave Foot Soldiers
Wearing impressive suits of armour, the foot soldiers of Styringheim fight bravely for the honour of the city, the countryside and last but not least for their lady. The suits of armour are replicas of the 14th-century armour worn during the battle of the city walls, when Valdemar Atterdag pillaged Visby. Styringheim is a Gotland-based society dedicated to medieval re-enactment. Its members sew clothes, cook food, build suits of armour, practise other crafts, play music and dance – everything that makes the Middle Ages a time worth experiencing. Dressed in their 14th-century armour, they fight one another with cane swords – exactly as medieval fighters used to practise. Chivalry is the operative word in this historic sport: you are fighting for the honour of your lady.
The Archers - Gutars Bågskyttar
The city and the countryside each have a team of skilled archers on their side. Enter Gutars Bågskyttar, with their bows at the ready, to show off their skill at hitting the target. A series of knockout rounds will separate the wheat from the chaff, until we are left with one overall champion. Watch the birdie! Gutars Bågskyttar is a medieval re-enactment society that aims to bring the Middle Ages to life through longbow and crossbow archery and camp life.
The Herald
The herald is the spokesman for the country judge or the mayor
and he is the autocratic judge. He is the one who makes the
decisions on rennerbahn. The herald is also the speaker who
explains the separate features for the spectators.
The Mayor and the Country Judge
On their respective sides, city and countryside, the mayor and the
country judge sit with their entourage. They cheer for their fighters
and keep an eye on the battle between city and island countryside.
The fair ladies
Each knight chooses a maiden from the audience. It is in her honor
that he will fight. The knight’s attendant will lead the maiden to the
judges where she will be seated to watch the game from her elevated
position and to cheer her own fighter.
